Memorandum for the Comparative Understanding of Undergraduate Education between in Japan and in the United States

The purpose of this memorandum is to clarify the difference of undergraduate education between in Japan and in the United States. Through consideration of information based on the essay about undergraduate education in the United States from the real experience by Japanese scholars rather than on the academic research papers, following features are derived; the decision-making power related curriculum design is entitled to department or school rather than each individual faculty and the curriculum orientation gives priority to the demand from society in the United States, on the other hand in Japan, each individual faculty has more power for designing curriculum and the curriculum orientation gives more priority to the academic supply side.
