Hideto Fukudome is a professor of Higher Education at the Graduate School of Education, the University of Tokyo. His specialty is comparative and historical research in higher education. He particularly focuses his research on comparative studies of colleges and universities in Japan and the United States. His recent research focuses on the philosophy and curriculum of undergraduate education. He has also made scholarly contributions in the areas of graduate education, diversity and multiculturalism in higher education, and academic governance. He has had close exchanges with Stanford University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
He currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Integrated Educational Sciences and the Director of the Center for International Exchange at the Graduate School of Education. Additionally, as a Special Assistant to the President, he is involved in establishing the University of Tokyo's new College of Design. He has previously held faculty positions at Hiroshima University and Hitotsubashi University before moving to UTokyo.
He is actively involved in academic associations both domestically and internationally. Currently, he serves as the representative of Historical Studies on Higher Education (大学史研究会). He also holds various roles within the Japanese Association of Higher Education Research (日本高等教育学会), Japan Comparative Education Society (日本比較教育学会), and Japan Association for College and University Education (大学教育学会), including Board Member, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal, Chair of the International Committee, Research Committee Member, and Research Funding Selection Member. Internationally, he actively presents research at the Comparative & International Education Society (CIES), the Higher Education Research Association (HERA), and some other academic associations.
He receives research grants from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and some private foundations. He is involved in numerous collaborative research projects in educational studies.
